Artist Statement

Nature is my happy place. Fleeting imagery of the land inspires my work drawn from time spent exploring outdoors. My creativity is driven by an emotional connection to the subject matter. Whether I am plunging down black diamond runs in the Rockies, discovering new bike trails near my home in Calgary, kayaking the clear waters near the family cottage in Saskatchewan, or pausing to sketch plein air, my quest is to capture that sense of adventure and joy on canvas. The fusion of colours, materials and textures gives these images an opportunity to sparkle on canvas, transforming them into something exceptional, very much like the landscape that inspires them.

Artist Biography

One can hardly grow up under the canvas of the prairie's "Living Skies" without feeling an intimate connection to the vast landscapes and florals that often inspire the paintings of Melanie Morstad. Based in Calgary, Melanie's passion for nature is boldly expressed with colour, texture, and an emotional connection. An avid skier and cyclist, her paintings find inspiration along the trails of southern Alberta.

Melanie's Business Degree in Marketing combined with the study of painting at the Alberta University of the Arts, has led to a thriving career as a professional artist. She curated and implemented over 175 pieces of original art in a permanent outdoor gallery in Alberta's Fish Creek Provincial Park. She is President of the Burns Visual Arts Society, Canada's oldest artist cooperative; juried member of the Alberta Society of Artists and participates in various arts organizations. Melanie is a professional GOLDEN artist educator and enthusiastic mentor. Her work can be found in numerous collections and galleries.
